Mercata customers will have access to technology that goes beyond
the Web, allowing them to buy using cable television and other electronic
communication devices.
Mercata
will enter the electronic retailing market with its shopping Web
site in the Spring of 1999. In the year 2000, Mercata will deploy
interactive cable television shopping in selected markets in the
United States.

will participate in the rapidly growing e-commerce market, which
in 1998 was an estimated $13 to $17 billion and is expected to more
than double each year, according to projections by the Boston Consulting
Group. Online retailing offers customers 24-hour-a-day convenience,
wide selection, and rapid delivery to the home or office. In the
United States alone, more than 30 million consumers are now shopping
online, saving both time and money.

was founded in September 1998 with a management and technical team
of electronic commerce, retailing, and software industry veterans.
Funding
Mercata
is funded exclusively by Vulcan Ventures Inc., the investment management
group of Paul Allen.
